  brianna bolden-hardge, a mother of two, a devout jw and a career california civil servant, sues the office of the state controller which revoked a job offer after she objected to swearing a loyalty oath, even though three other state agencies she worked for "either did not insist on the oath or provided her a religious accommodation to it" (by allowing to submit a clarifying statement).

  she sued, and the case was dismissed by a district court.

  now it's heard by the ninth circuit.

  I think the State is right here. They want primary allegiance to their cause, not primary allegiance to a religion.

  If her religion tells her to violate the law or compromise information, she would do it, there is no way you can hire someone on those basis for an entrusted position. That is basically what the oath of allegiance is, it's a written or verbal contract that you will put the law ahead of your own self-interest.

  That is the same as upholding loyalty or commitment. If you do not wish to bear allegiance, you're basically saying you're not willing to uphold loyalty/commitment when it comes to religious interference.

  Proper prayer is basically a form of meditation. It can take many forms, such as chanting, reciting, reflection, group prayers. Hence why Catholic and other classic prayers are so prevalent and powerful, there is a form of repetition in it with the goal of transcendence, it can put your mind at ease by concentrating on things that aren't your ideas and things like the Lord's Prayer remind you that you MAY get the things you need if you work hard and do things for others.

  The prayer you learn as a JW however isn't that at all, it's a wish list for Santa basically, it is very self-centered and prayer as a form of meditation is actually eschewed. As a JW you pray for yourself, other JW's and for Armageddon to come and other such nonsense, it is totally debased.

  Compare the phrase "Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors." with any JW prayer you've ever heard from the stage. There is virtually nobody that ties your past actions towards your fellow person to the provision of the daily needs, you're not telling God in the Lord's Prayer that you need help forgiving another person, when the prayer starts, it's presumed you have already forgiven the person, only then can you ask for your own forgiveness and daily bread. It's an entirely different mindset than "please give me my food for the day, and help me overcome with the struggles I'm having with person x or y" - which is how the JW's teach you to pray, to ask for help without putting any action in yourself.

  Some real classics in that era. The 60s-90s were the golden age of modern film.

  Depends, for me and my first wife it was more a way of getting away from home. My girlfriend(s) after that as well, a way of getting away from home. My second wife was definitely a status thing, plus also the low availability of males, just having a boyfriend in good standing is a status.

  @GodBeliever: I like the Brian Cox quote, he makes a really good point. It seems rather unarguable that if you want a resolution, this may simply be an artifact of human thought and that the world will still just exist without making sense to any primate brains. But if the laws of physics leave no room for a deity, why would you need one? it would seem very unnecessarily complex.

  What is your argument for any deity that I can’t apply to any other deity or a teapot for that matter?

  there is a trial currently starting - even funnier than the baldwin nonsense.. yes, everyone's favorite actor, singer and hate crime victim is going on trial.. i am, of course, talking about jussie smollett.

  he's going on trial for lying to chicago police and wasting their time.. he's obviously as guilty as hell, but i just can't wait for this to unfold.. it's gonna be hilarious ....

  CNN is calling the verdict racism because he is a black man going to prison, while the women who called the cops on that man in the park for harassing her, did only get a slap on the wrist because she apologized (even though the guy actually threatened her with violence). In both cases however, it was a leftist that was calling on the Southern Democrat tradition of lynching.

  How sick do you have to be to believe that Smollet deserves to walk because he is black.

  been meaning to do that for a while - and just saw an article in bar (see below) and thought - that's how i feel today (grin) i've had the flu for 2 weeks and feel really pissed off.. sunday before last, my friend visiting from china, calls up and says come to dinner tonite, meet me at darling harbour.

  so did that, and even though we could've walked to the restaurant he'd selected in about 15 minutes, he decides (he's rather wealthy) we should take a water taxi to circular quay (for those who know sydney).

  i protested, as i knew it was expensive - $70 for a 10 minute ride.we're no sooner in the boat, than it starts to rain like hell, and before the boatmaster could get the curtains down, i was soaked on one side.

  The Wikipedia article on the matter has a lot of source material you can find out more about It. Suffice to say that it is likely Jesus died with his arms outstretched (IF he existed in the first place) or at least the story would be told like that due to the symbolism.

  It seems the practice evolved over time and also based on what was expedient and available.

  Jussie Smollett will now have to share a cell with both his attacker and his victim. I can hear the leftists complaining now that this is somehow unfair. Don Lemon himself assisted in this hoax, after the Cuomo comedy duo left the building there at CNN and yesterday another child molester (a CNN producer) was fired, I’m wondering if CNN will start cleaning house.

  You really think you can convince him?

  Here is what you do, you start talking to your boss: I used to belong to a cult, I left a long time ago, but this guy is a leader there, I just want you to be aware, because they’re really insistent about me going back and they spend their time proselytizing even at work.

  Then if he starts, you say, I really don’t want to talk about this, this is a place of business and you have no right to use your paid hours proselytizing here. If he insists or repeats, you file a complaint to your boss. You keep doing that every time, until he gets fired.

  Or he is aware of the risk and doesn’t want to get fired, he keeps his mouth shut.
